During the summer of 2019 it was decided that the group should put up
new bat box schemes around the county. To do this the group has undertaken to build a variety of bat boxes.
Bat boxes are based on Kent, CJM and standard boxes with some modification suggested by Michael and John. Some Kents have a third deeper cavity chamber on the front. Others have a full width or half width cavity between the 2 slots at the top. Martin was gifted some thick wood through work which allowed us to make some hibernation boxes. Box production is currently approaching 100 boxes with a third batch about to commence.
The group is starting with around 4 trees of 3 boxes in each location so we can populate quite a few schemes with a view to adding further boxes to schemes once bats have taken up residence.
Bat Box Schemes
Foxcovert (near Calverton a NWT reserve)
5 Trees each have 3 boxes here put up on 19th October.
Stonepit Plantation (near Strelley a NWT reserve)
4 trees of 3 boxes were erected here on 3rd November.
Besthorpe Reserve (NWT)
Requested that the group help them spend money on enhancing the environment for bats at Meering and Mons Pool. This will be a mixture of bought Greenwoods Ecohabitat boxes and our bat boxes. Hopefully in December we will be putting up 9 boxes on 3 trees at each of the 2 locations.
Top Valley Linear Walk
This scheme has been re-discovered. Angelena, our chair for the last 2 years made these boxes with the students of Stanstead Primary School. We believe the City Council Park Ranger put these boxes up. The walk had a lot of old oak trees with abundant PRF’s which look very promising.
Other schemes are being planned with relevant authorities for Bramcote Park and Martin’s Pond / Harrisons Plantation.
