There will be a series of zoom webinars aimed toward new members or members wishing to develop their skills in identifying bat calls from active or passive detectors full spectrum detectors. Members will be emailed details and webinar links. This will give you skills needed to identify bats from detectors in Bats in Churches, Clumber Park and Echoes of Echolocation.

How bats use echolocation to navigate and find food.

NBG use Titley static detectors and the free version of Insight will help you analyse these calls.

Monday 20th April 7.30pm Basic bat call and species identification

Each species has a typical echolocation frequency range which can help separate species recorded.

Monday 27th April 7.30 Social calls and some call artifacts.

Social calls can confuse some auto id apps into identifying the wrong species. Pipistrelle social calls and Noctule calls are very common. However some social calls are unique to a species and may allow certanty with identification.

Clumber Park Yew Tree Project
Sunday 22nd March 2026

This project first ran in 2016 for 3 years with Ben McLean. Little documented work had been done on bat roosts in Yew trrees before this. 73 Yew trees in 3 areas were studied over 3 years and published in the 'Northern Bats'.

On Sunday 22nd March 2026 a group of us will revisit these trees and record any bats found with torch and endoscopes under supervision of licenced bat workers.

This is a members only event with a mambers email inviting interested members.

Creswell Crags Hibernation Survey. Sunday 1st March 2026

Bookings will be advertised to members when open.

There are 11 places available. We restrict numbers to help minimise disturbance.

It will be an early start,  8.30am, to allow time for introductions and be ready to head into the Gorge at 9.00am, so we are out of the way for the public tours.

Sensible clothing, it can feel very cold if wind blows through the gorge, sturdy footwear, safety helmet, torches and preferably removable clothing i.e an overall so as not to soil the cafe or/and cars on the way home as when crawling around the caves your bottom half in particular can get dirty.

At present there is a new ANPR system for parking, it is important to pay the fee to avoid getting a fine.

The cafe will be open for food after the survey, previous surveys have normally completed around 12.30 onwards.
